Having healthy and glowing skin is every person's dream or at least, I know it was my dream! However, like most other people in this world, I suffered from acne and blemishes.
My acne wasn't too bad, I know people who've had it worse than me, but it did take it's toll on my self esteem. And having other people innocently point it out didn't help either. When I was younger, I tried to cover my flaws by covering my face with pounds of makeup. However, I came to realise that covering my face with makeup definitely wasn't going to give me the flawless look that having healthy skin would give me.
So, being the little nerd that I am, I immediately opened up my search engine and searched for things which would help reduce my acne. I tried everything from home remedies to eating fruits to investing in expensive skincare ranges *cough* I'm looking at you Proactiv *cough*. No matter what I tried, nothing seemed to help my skin problems. Sometimes, my skin would get better momentarily, but after that, the acne just came back again.
One day, I was browsing through youtube looking for a solution for my flawed skin when I came across a video on Accutane (also know as Isotretinoin). It was actually really helpful. Anyway, being a cautious person, I went to a dermatologist who prescribed me Accutane, among other things. My dermatologist was AMAZING and if any of you living in Karachi suffer skin problems, don't hesitate about contacting me for more information on my dermatologist. I'd be happy to give you more information!
Anyway, I was on Accutane for about 4 months. I was prescribed first, a pill every day and then it gradually went down to a pill every other day. I instantly saw a dramatic difference concerning my skin. My acne seemed to disappear and my skin got a whole lot better! I was ecstatic and just really thankful. So, Accutane did help me a lot with my acne.
However, there are some side effects to Accutane or it's derivatives. Not everyone will experience these side effects, but they are completely possible. They include depression, sleep problems, crying spells, agitation, sudden numbness or weakness, blurred vision, severe headaches, seizures, vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice, diarrhoea, rectal bleeding and many more. The symptoms that I experienced were depression, crying spells and severe headaches. I'm not saying that you'll experience all or none of these symptoms, but in circumstances such as this, it is best to be cautious.
All in all, Accutane did help with my acne a lot. It really helped cleared up my skin with minimal side effects and for that, I am extremely grateful.
If any of you suffer from acne or related skin problems, do discuss Accutane as possible treatment with your dermatologist. DO NOT take Isotretinoin without a prescription. It is absolutely vital that you consult with a medical professional before you take Isotretinoin. Furthermore, if you are living in Pakistan, then you have to be extra careful. If your doctor is putting you on Accutane or it's derivatives, do discuss it's side effects with your dermatologist first.
I really hope this post helped you get an idea on what Accutane is and how it can effect you.
